The “Alverca Palace” “Casa Do Alentejo” (Alentejo House)
Originally built in the late 17th century just outside Lisbon’s Fernandine Wall, the building that now houses Casa do Alentejo has undergone several transformations over the centuries. The site once hosted a pigsty, a public slaughterhouse, a tannery, and stables, before becoming a high school and eventually, in 1919, the “Magestic Club” (later the “Monumental Club”).
In 1932, it was rented to the Grémio Alentejano, which later became Casa do Alentejo. The building’s most significant transformation occurred in the early 20th century, when architect Silva Júnior led an ambitious renovation to convert it into a casino. This project involved renowned artists and craftsmen of the time, including Jorge Colaço, Júlio Silva, and José Bazalisa.
Inside, the richly decorated interiors reflect a mix of styles—Moorish, neo-Doric, Louis XV and XVI, Art Nouveau, and even medieval Gothic. The Arab-inspired central courtyard, elaborate frescoes, custom furniture, and iconic tile panels make the Casa do Alentejo one of Lisbon’s most unique historical and architectural landmarks.
